There are lots of different voices speaking about Christianity or identifying as Christian. Maybe you’ve seen a Christian who has made a really positive difference, maybe you’ve seen a Christian who has behaved badly. Perhaps you’ve heard the name of Jesus used in lots of different ways. Or you’ve heard there are things written about him. You’ve even heard they are made up.
Whatever your questions or experience, maybe you are wondering:
What is Christianity about?
We believe the best place to answer this question is to open up the Bible. The Bible is where God speaks for himself. The Bible tells us the most important story that has ever been told. The Bible is God’s story, and in God’s story, we find our story.
The Bible, says that Christianity is all about how we can be connected with God.
You can sum it all up in 3 words:
What's your idea of a perfect world? The world we all want is where the brokenness is gone and relationships work. We want a perfect world. And, this is actually what the world was like when God made the world and put us in it.
God made people to be connected to him in a relationship where he is the king - where he cares for us and shows us the best way to live.
Unfortunately, we didn’t stay connected to God like we could have. Instead, we’ve broken away from him and we’ve become his enemies. This is what the Bible calls “sin” - it’s when we disobey God and don’t treat him as our king.
In Romans we learn that “the wages of sin is death”, which means that because we have broken away from God, we deserve punishment for our rejection of God - life will end, and after that, we will face his judgement.
Even though we’ve sinned and disconnected ourselves from God, he still wants to have a relationship with us. That’s why he sent Jesus - Jesus came so that we could be reconnected with God.
We need to ask God to reconnect us because of what Jesus did for us. Jesus is the only way to be reconnected with God. We can't get reconnected by trying really hard and doing good things. It is a gift from God, his undeserved kindness (grace) to us. Ephesians 2:8-10 tells us:
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Being reconnected with God means that we can enjoy being friends with God now, and we can look forward to being in a perfect world forever in heaven. We get a picture of what reconnection will ultimately be like in Revelation 21:1-5:
21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
If God has shown you your story in his story, then you can be reconnected right now. You can talk to him directly, this is what is called prayer. You don’t need special words, or someone else to do this for you. You can use the words below, or your own words:
THANK YOU that Jesus has died and risen to life to reconnect me to you.
I’m SORRY for the sin in my life where I have rejected you as King and lived disconnected from you.
PLEASE forgive me and help me to follow you as King.
If you have talked to God about being reconnected, or want to know more about being reconnected with God, then you can find a church near you that can help you out.
